WB will support Bangladesh : Dr Salehuddin
DHAKA, Sept 20, 2024– Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Adviser to the interim government on the Ministries of Finance and Commerce, announced today that the World Bank would support Bangladesh in implementing key reforms in the banking and other sectors.
“We’ll receive support from the World Bank for the reforms we’ve initiated in the banking sector,” said the Finance Adviser while speaking to reporters following a meeting with Martin Raiser, Vice President for the South Asia Region of the World Bank, held at the Finance Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Dr. Salehuddin shared that the discussions covered a wide range of topics, including budget support, assistance for the health and energy sectors, fertilizer imports, food self-sufficiency, post-flood rehabilitation, and aid for the Rohingya refugees.
“The World Bank was very receptive to the proposals we presented and offered concrete feedback. They assured us, alongside other development partners, that there would be no hesitation in providing the necessary funding or assistance,” he noted.
The Finance Adviser further highlighted discussions on increasing investment in the private sector and addressing challenges in business and trade. “They have assured us of their support, and we expect to receive the required assistance,” he added.
When asked about the potential amount of fresh support from the World Bank, Dr. Salehuddin declined to disclose specific figures.
The meeting was also attended by World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Abdoulaye Seck, Operations Manager Gayle Martin, and IFC Country Representative Martin Holtman. Additionally, Finance Division Secretary Dr. Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder and Economic Relations Division (ERD) Secretary Shahriar Kader Siddiky were present.
